[Caption] This unique side sleigh from Newfoundland was a status symbol for several generations. A foot pedal brake was a convenience for the driver who stood at the dashboard or sat on a "box." Passengers sat facing the ditch, ready to be tossed into a snowdrift rather than into oncoming traffic, in case of accident.
